Extremely difficult to open, the steel door is characterized by a size and solidity that gives it the appearance of a permanent installation and fixed element of the museum architecture. Aufwand encourages the viewer to expend energy in order to fully realize the “work” at the most fundamental physical level of that word’s meaning, and at the same time participate in an affectionate linguistic nod to Marcel Duchamp’s notion of the viewer’s key role in the process of actualizing any work of art.
